The first place they came to was a small convenience store that had been looted. All the glass had been broken out and the place had been ransacked. Sonny walked inside but didn’t find the measuring stick he was looking for. Manny walked around the building but couldn’t find anything useful.
When they got back to the truck Manny said, “Let’s go check out the place where we got fuel before and see if there’s any left. There are a couple of gas stations close to that place, too.”
When they arrived at the delivery company they saw quite a bit of damage had been done since they had last been there. Someone had poked a hole in the diesel tank and it was empty. Banging on the side of the gas tank they could tell that it still had some fuel left in it.
There was a truck stop a few miles away and Sonny suggested they check it. The building had been looted of anything useful. Sonny looked for a measuring stick for the tanks but couldn’t find one. Manny found a piece of conduit in one corner of the garage area and asked if they could use that.
Sonny said, “ That’ll work. Let’s see if we can find some fuel. They went to the area where the underground tanks were and took the covers off the filling stations. Sonny stuck the conduit down the fill line and pulled it back out. It had liquid down the bottom four foot of the pole. Rubbing the wet spot between his fingers he said, “This is a diesel tank.”
Locating another fill station they did the same thing and found a tank that had gas in it. Manny said, “We’ll come back first thing in the morning and get as much of this stuff as we can.”
Heading back to the houses they talked about making the trip to Deals Gap. Sonny was getting excited about hitting the road again. They had been cooped up too long. Manny was talking about heading down to southern Alabama come fall. “We can get thirty miles from the Gulf Coast and be in farming country. If we could find an isolated farm that would be great for next winter.”
They had two trucks that used diesel fuel. Sonny transferred the fuel from one truck to fill the tank on the second one. He would take the truck with the near empty tank and get it filled up. Gathering up all the gas cans they had accumulated they headed out the next morning with three vehicles.
Sonny hooked up the generator to one of the gas pumps and filled the trucks and all the gas cans. He then moved to a diesel pump and filled the diesel truck with fuel. Getting back to the houses Ginger asked, “When do you want to leave?”
Manny asked what their food situation was.
Ginger replied, “It’s not good, I think we should see about getting some more food before we leave. Who knows what we’ll find
